Why Dutch and Belgian stores pick Mollie
In the Netherlands most online purchases are paid with iDEAL. In Belgium it's Bancontact. A checkout without those methods loses buyers who simply don't want to type in a card number. Mollie, an Amsterdam company, has offered these local methods for years and is widely used by European shops.
Many merchants already have a Mollie account from an earlier webshop, a WooCommerce site or a marketplace. With Settl you can use that same account for your Shopify store, so your payments, refunds and payouts stay in one place.
How Mollie's fees work
Mollie charges per transaction, and the price differs per method. Bank methods like iDEAL usually cost a fixed amount per payment, while cards are a percentage plus a fixed amount, higher for cards from outside Europe. Check Mollie's pricing page for the current rates for your account.
You can also add Mollie as a payment option inside Shopify's own checkout in some countries. If you do that instead of using Shopify Payments, check whether Shopify's third-party transaction fee applies on your plan: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced (checked October 2026). On a Settl checkout, payments don't run through Shopify's checkout, so that fee doesn't come into it.
Which methods a Shopify Mollie checkout brings
Through Mollie, you can show these methods on your Settl checkout:
- iDEAL and Bancontact (euro)
- Cards, Apple Pay and PayPal (linked through Mollie)
- KBC/CBC and Belfius for Belgian bank customers
- EPS for Austria and Przelewy24 and BLIK for Poland
- TWINT for Switzerland
- Bank transfer
- Other methods you've switched on in Mollie, such as Klarna, through Mollie's own payment page
What paying looks like for the buyer
The buyer fills in their details on your checkout and picks a method, for example iDEAL. They're taken to Mollie's secure page or straight to their bank app, approve the payment and return to your store's confirmation. Mollie tells Settl the payment went through and the order is created in Shopify.
Settl shows each buyer the methods that fit where they are and the currency they pay in. A Dutch buyer sees iDEAL first, a Belgian buyer Bancontact. Methods that only work in euro, like iDEAL, are hidden for other currencies.
Tips for a Mollie checkout that converts
- Put iDEAL first for Dutch buyers and Bancontact first for Belgian buyers. Settl does this by country, so check the order looks right in the preview.
- Keep your prices in euro for the Netherlands and Belgium. iDEAL and Bancontact only work in euro.
- Set a clear description in Mollie, so the payment is easy to recognise in the buyer's banking app.
- Selling a lot outside the Benelux? Add Whop or Stripe for cards and wallets, and keep Mollie for local methods.
- Test with your test_ key first, then switch to the live_ key and place one small real order.
Payouts and your Mollie account
Payments collect in your Mollie balance and are paid out to your bank account on the schedule you choose in Mollie. Refunds are made from your Mollie dashboard, just like with any other shop on Mollie.
Mollie checks every new account and has rules about what can be sold. Make sure your account is fully verified and that Mollie knows what your store sells before you send volume through it.
