The three costs people mix up
When people talk about Shopify fees, they usually mean one of three things. It helps to keep them apart.
- The plan price: a fixed monthly amount for Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus, a bit lower if you pay yearly.
- Payment processing: the rate for each card or wallet payment, charged by Shopify Payments or by whichever provider handles the payment.
- The third-party transaction fee: an extra percentage Shopify adds when an order is paid through a provider other than Shopify Payments.
Shopify transaction fees for third-party providers
If you use Shopify Payments, Shopify doesn't add this extra fee. If you connect another provider to Shopify's checkout, it does. The fee is a percentage of the order total and is billed by Shopify on your regular bill, not taken from your payout by the provider. These are the rates on shopify.com/pricing, checked October 2026:
- Basic: 2% per order
- Grow: 1% per order
- Advanced: 0.6% per order
- Plus: 0.2% per order
What that looks like in money
Say you sell €5000 a month on Basic and your payments run through a third-party provider in Shopify's checkout. The 2% extra fee is €100 a month, on top of your plan and on top of what your provider charges for processing. At €50000 a month it's €1000.
That's why the fee becomes a real reason to change plans or providers as a store grows. On Grow the same €50000 would cost €500 in this fee, and on Advanced €300. Plan prices are higher on those tiers, so do the sum for your own volume. Shopify lists Basic at $39 a month, Grow at $105 and Advanced at $399 when paid monthly (checked October 2026).
Processing fees still apply everywhere
No setup removes payment processing. Every provider charges something per payment, whether that's Shopify Payments, Stripe, Mollie, PayPal or Whop. Rates differ by provider, country, card type and payment method. A local method like iDEAL often costs a fixed amount per payment, while cards are usually a percentage plus a small fixed fee.
So when you compare options, add up the full cost per order: provider fee, any Shopify fee, and any fee from apps or checkout tools you use.
Don't forget smaller costs that sit around the payment itself: currency conversion when buyers pay in another currency, fees for refunds or chargebacks, and payout fees some providers charge. They rarely show up in headline rates but do show up on your statement.
Where Settl fits
With Settl, the buyer pays on your own checkout on your own domain, through your own provider account. The money goes straight to that provider and the paid order is created in Shopify. Settl itself charges 0% per order: you pay a flat monthly price, starting at €29,99 (first month €4,99).
Many other external checkouts charge a percentage per order on top of their monthly price, often around 1%. Settl doesn't, so its cost stays the same whether you sell ten orders or ten thousand. What Shopify charges on your account depends on your plan and how your orders are processed, so check your own Shopify bill after your first month rather than relying on anyone's promise, including ours.
