The four places an upsell can go
- In the cart or cart drawer, before checkout: 'Customers also bought' or a bundle deal.
- In the checkout itself: an order bump, a small add-on next to the pay button.
- Right after payment: a one-click offer before the thank-you page.
- On the thank-you page: a discount on the next order or a related product.
What needs Shopify Plus
On Shopify's own checkout, apps can only add content to the information, shipping and payment steps on Shopify Plus, according to Shopify's Help Center (checked October 2026). That's why many upsell apps list 'checkout upsells' as Plus only.
On other plans, apps can still add offers to the cart, to the thank-you and order-status pages, and as a post-purchase offer. So a Shopify checkout upsell inside the payment step is the part most non-Plus stores can't use.
Upsell apps vs your own checkout
If you're happy with Shopify's checkout, an upsell app is the simplest route. Apps like Zipify OCU, ReConvert and Rebuy have big review bases and low entry prices, and they keep Shop Pay and Shopify's native checkout. Many of them price by order count or upsell revenue, so check how the cost grows with your store.
If you want an order bump in the checkout itself but aren't on Plus, or you also want your own payment providers and design, your own checkout is the other route. That's where Settl fits.
How upsells work in Settl
Settl's checkout runs on your own domain and includes upsells on every plan. There's an order bump: one tick box before paying that adds a product to the order. And there's an offer after purchase: one more product after paying, with the buyer's details already filled in, shipped together with the rest.
Discount codes made in Shopify work on the checkout and are booked on the Shopify order. Reminder emails go out in the buyer's language, with their items and your logo. Every cart, including the upsell, is priced again from Shopify before payment, and the paid order lands in Shopify as one normal order.
Settl takes 0% per order, so you don't pay a share of your upsell revenue either. Money goes straight to your own payment provider.
What makes an upsell actually sell
Keep it small and related. A good order bump costs a fraction of the main product and makes sense with it: a care kit with sneakers, a spare filter with a purifier, gift wrap with a present. One clear offer beats three competing ones.
Write the offer like a quick yes: what it is, the price, and why it helps. Use a real photo. Then measure how many orders take it and what it adds to your average order value, and swap offers that don't perform.
Don't pre-tick the box or hide the extra cost. Buyers who feel tricked ask for refunds, and refunds and disputes cost far more than the upsell earned. An honest offer that a fifth of buyers happily take is worth more than an aggressive one that leaves people annoyed.
Finally, think about timing. A checkout upsell catches buyers before they pay, so it should be quick to decide on. A bigger or more expensive offer works better after payment, when the main order is already safe and the buyer can add one more item with a single click.
